Streamload – Mediamax – Nirvanix – The Linkup – Be Afraid!

I received an email over the weekend from a company I absolutely despise.

Mediamax – “The online storage company that can loose your files and does” are in their process on trying to hide under the guise of a new company and website.

Hello MediaMax customer – xxxxxxxxxx:

We have some exciting news to share! We will be launching a major upgrade to MediaMax this month. With this release, we’re going to be renaming our service to “The Linkup” (www.thelinkup.com). The Linkup supports all of the current functionality of MediaMax, but also has some exciting new features.

The basic info you need to know:

“The Linkup”: MediaMax will be renamed to “The Linkup” on April 25. The new URL will be www.thelinkup.com and we’re expecting that you’ll love the new service and features. You can check out a preview now at:

http://www.thelinkup.com/

Current subscribers: If you are currently a paying subscriber to MediaMax, you don’t need to do anything. Your account will automatically be moved from MediaMax to The Linkup before the end of the month. All files that you uploaded to MediaMax after July 1, 2007 will be automatically moved to The Linkup. If you’d like to move additional files, please select them here using the “mover” tool:

http://www.thelinkup.com/mover

We’ll process requests made using this tool once per day through the end of this month. You can use this tool more than once if you forgot some files the first time.

Current non-paying users: If you are not currently a paying subscriber to MediaMax, you need to upgrade your account before April 25 to be included in the move. Otherwise, your account will be deleted and all your files will be lost. Click here to upgrade your MediaMax account:

The Linkup Prices: Effective April 25, we will be increasing the prices of all of our premium subscriptions, but, in addition to the increased stability and new features that The Linkup provides, we are also removing bandwidth limits on all accounts, so there will be no more bandwidth “overage” charges (for personal, non-commercial use only). For example: $4.95/mo subscribers will now be paying $5.95/mo; $9.95/mo subscribers will now be paying $11.95/mo. Your MediaMax subscription will be automatically moved to a The Linkup subscription that is closest to what you currently pay. Additional subscription details will be available on The Linkup web site.

That’s it! If you’re currently a paying subscriber, there is nothing for you to do (except for selecting extra files that you’d like to have moved). For additional information please visit our blog: http://mediamaxblog.blogspot.com/

Thanks for reading, and we’re looking forward to having you at The Linkup!

so who do you use for storage now? I have been researching and it seems after I finally decide on a service I find out their deepest and darkest secrets! Very annoying. Have you found a reliable service?

  2. partyoflife Says:

    Hi Jannica,

I am hosting the files myself at the moment.

Having said that, I just came into work this morning and found that the files we have stored on Omnidrive are still been served even though it looks like they shut down for good.

To be honest, after all this I don’t think I would trust anyone else with my data.

If you make yourself responsible for your data, then you only have yourself to blame if you mess it up!

  3. Dr. Mike Wendell Says:

Here’s my take on the whole situation:

    Link

I lost about 20 gigs of files that chances are I’ll never get back. Many of them that were donated or I had purchased myself.

    For reference, I’m using adrive.com.

  4. Dee Says:

Thank goodness I’ve incurred minimal damages. I never received notification of the move, just happened to come across it myself when attempting a regular download of my files. I’ve since unsubscribed from the service when the download speed came to practically a screeching halt. I still haven’t seen all of my files, as they’ve promised but I don’t really expect to, sadly.

Don’t people file class action lawsuits anymore?

  5. rene Says:

Mama mia! I can’t login into Linkup, but I have a MediaMax account… I lost all my files…

THIS IS AWFUL! I AM ANGRY AND DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO…………….

  6. partyoflife Says:

Great post Mike, the more people who write about it the faster we can these people out of business for good.

Dee, I’d had enough of dealing with them, it took over a year to get them to close the account and I had to tell my bank to refuse any charges they made to my card, they shut my account and lost all my files.

    Rene, go see a solicitor!

Can we not file a legal case together? There must be a way before all companies go MediaMax way.

  9. GotSmart Says:

I got screwed! Mediamax was a pain in the a** from the minute I signed up with them. When I got the email about switching over to “The Linkup”, I gave them the benefit of the doubt, however, after trying the “new” service out, I realized this is not anything I wanted and I hated everything about it. I searched the whole website to cancel my account. It took me over two hours one evening. I knew that Mediamax had not fully transferred the files fully over so I sent Mediamax an email to cancel my account with The Linkup and NOT to charge me. Lo and behold, I was charged for the next month. I finally decided to send The Linkup an amail at a support address hoping they would receive it. They did not respond to me for over a week. In the meantime I had filed a dispute with Paypal and then I received a nasty email from The Linkup, telling ME I should have went to Pay myself to cancel my subscription. This matter was finally resolved with Paypal and I received my monies back. The Linkup, however, uses several different accounts with Paypal which makes them even more suspect. I am glad to be done with them and have found a much better service that is BBB approved and very trustworthy.

    LEAVE THE LINKUP NOW!!!

Somehow i missed the point. Probably lost in translation :) Anyway … nice blog to visit.

    cheers, Flogger.

  11. Sam Says:

Thanks you guys for your comments . I just almost subscribed for this. Thanks for you I will go with someone else

  12. Douglas Long Says:

Just now got an e-mail from The Linkup saying they are shutting down for good. Thanks alot you no good SOB’s!!! I paid for a subscription just to get my files transferred when they made the changeover in May and they still lost them, so I guess they are gone forever. Oh well-misery loves company, and it sounds like I have lots of that!!!

  13. Rich Laabs Says:

If ANYONE wants to file a class action lawsuit against these crooks, sign me up! I lost over 500 Gbs of data…and I was a PAYING customer!! I logged in today to start pulling things down and low & behold…I have NO FILES! This a such a scam, a screw job, call it what you will. The crooks who bought messed up Media Max were looking for data to steal, I am sold on that. Well, they have 500 Gbs of mine.

Don’t bother e-mailing tech support, you get an auto reply with a copy of what the home page says…which translated means that you are screwed!! Sign me up for the lawsuit if someone files one… myobdick@gmail.com

  14. Dee Says:

I just received a mail from box.net, as a former customer of The Linkup/MediaMax. I guess they either earned a few bucks by selling my information to these people or they’re trying to start up another new one, with similar language, how it’s used by blah blah blah and “as seen on blah blah blah.” Sounds like the same old tactics as MediaMax used, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve decided to give fraud another chance.

  15. Dee Says:

Just as I suspected, if you go to mediamax.com you’ll be greeted by an ad for box.net. Now to get the word out on these bozo’s as well. I’d hate for anyone to have to go through what the rest of us have been through with MediaMax and then The Linkup, which turned out to be more like “secure headache” than “secure storage.”

  16. Davinator Says:

It seems there’s some hope for a class action lawsuit… who’s up for one? Anyone know a good lawyer?

  17. adam Says:

i’ll never again trust this type of service.
i should have listened to that little voice that said there was a problem when i could not find a contact phone number…always a bad sign!
